It's interesting that Estes recycled the "bug" decal from the Yellow Jacket kit (#2008) to use on the Hornet kit. Does that make it a "Horne Jacket" or a "Yellow Horn"??

FWIW, here is the decal I had screen printed in 1998. There were four colors - red, white, black and gray. Note the registration marks on the page. The guy did a good job of laying down each color over the previous one, the four colors in the mark are virtually right on top of each other.

The main advantages to screen printing are that you can precisely control the color of your decals (as shown by the Hornet ones!), the printed image is much harder and more durable than Alps ink, and the colors tend to be quite opaque.

The drawbacks are you need screen printing equipment, screens, and inks.

Actually, I believe Estes recycled the bug from the original Centuri Hornet kit, which was released prior to the Yellowjacket.

Your Hornet example has only one color, right? So you would only need one screen. I'm confused what you mean you do when you have multiple colors, many of which are laid down on top of previous colors.

Yes, my screen contains all the artwork elements and I physically mask off the areas I dont want to print. I dont touch the decal once I start (it gets taped down to the work surface). I used the actual paint for this decal, and typically if you dont use vinyl screen ink, you will distroy the screen...and that is in fact what happened. I dont use this method if im screening more than 2 or 3 colors, if I have more colors, I have the artwork split out with registration marks. I would show an example if I could...

I see, so it was a Hornet before it was a Yellow Jacket before it was a Hornet.

Nevertheless, the finish is excellent but the decals are what really sets it off.

That decal is really nice!

It makes we want to learn how to silkscreen, but I fear that it is more time and money than I have.
