Redstone missile
Comrades:
As I mentioned in another post, I bought an ST-20 size missile nose cone for a Redstone. A couple of years ago, I purchased a surplus plastic Redstone fin can from jharding with the intention of making a missile version. I had extra ST-20 tubing and Peter Alway's 14 U.S. Army Missiles of the Cold War . I cut tubing and assembled the fin can, but I never got around to the warhead and put it aside. Whle going through the Shapeways 3d printing site earlier this year, I found the warhead with fins for $42. That was a little pricey, but I blew some Christmas money on it just to try it out. Attached are pictures of the rocket, as yet unfinished on the paint stick in this morning's blue Texas sky. The nose itself is very rough texture, but the fins are pre-molded and there are two engraved panel lines. I'm going to see if a couple of coats of filler primer will do the trick. I'll keep you posted.

I have thought of building the same model. I was going to get the Redstone fin can off Shapeways too. Your build reminds me that I have an extra set of the Estes plastic Redstone fins.

That nose cone looks very much like the one in the Saturn Press Aerobee 1500 kit (designed by Peter Alway). In this case it's a BT-60 size and so would fit atop a K-41 Mercury Redstone. The whole Aerobee 1500 kit will set you back less than $42 (if you can find one).
