Found it...

Check the MATERIAL drop-down box for your fins. Change it from "CUSTOM" to something else (BALSA works well ). I've corresponded with Tim and Paul about this, and they indicated they had tried to purge this 'custom' material out of the database. They did, but the entry you see in that box is not coming from the database. It's hard-wired into the program code.

In other words, it's a bug that got past them...

I ran the simulation on your design after changing that one entry, and tried a D15-6. I got just under 1300', needing only 16" of the launch rod, and deploying the parachute at a soft 3 FPS. Change the "Sweep Angle" on the fins to 18.50 degrees and you won't need any ballast in the nose to offset the extra mass of the engine -- the D15-6 had a margin of 0.98 with the fins like you had them. You want the margin to be at least 1.00, or better, for the model to be flight stable. With the sweep angle change mentioned, the flight-ready margin is now 1.04.

Not bad for a first attempt! Have you been using an earlier version for a while?

Default Thanks for the fix

I just started using Rocksim. I looked at the model weight when trying to find a fix.
I have used a lot of FEM programs, so I know that it is often the little most obsure thing that gets you. I started with the Cherokee Triple D. I always liked the Cherokee, and Delta two stage D models. I had built a Nike like two stage D model 10 years ago. Used a scaled booster with a ported stageing design that had a booster about 6 inches long. It flew well.
I have also used a potrted booster with a two stage mean machine going from D booster to E Mean Machine second stage.
Thanks for the help.
Bob

Ahh, another glutton for punishment, eh?

You'll fit in quite well here at our little asylum...

If you should want to build the Cherokee Double-D, our fellow forum member Sandman has recently picked up the production of Excelsior's decals; the Double-D decal sheet should still be in his catalog.

Welcome aboard!

Default ERRORS in part data files

I am using a trial Version: 9.0.5f80 Build 80
When i try to add a Coupler to an engine mount,
I get a ab ESTES JT-70A when iI pick an ESTES JT-50C, JT-55C, or JT-60C.
The data for the OD looks ok but the ID is larger.
Is there a website of reported errors?
Yes, the Rocksim Madness has started.
Thanks
Bob

Bob,

Look through THIS THREAD and download the database files we worked on for Estes and Centuri components (based on the SEMROC catalog of components). If you just want to add them to your existing database, save them in the RockSim "DataImport" folder before running the program again. As RockSim comes up, it will pull these CSV files into the current set, and you will have this data available for your next design.

We are about to go through the database update again here on YORF, but the data in these files is usable now.

There is a procedure to removing entries from the database, and if you understand spreadsheets and how to use them, it's not difficult. That's what these files really are -- Comma-Separated-Value spreadsheet files. You should be able to use either MS Excel or OOo Calc to do the editing. Just remember to strip out any double quotes that might get added by the spreadsheet program before saving them back.

Default Got it to work

Craig;

I downloaded the data files. I had to place them in the DataImport directory
were Rocksim is installed to get it to work.

I am lucky the wife is out of the country for a while.
I don't think she would understand this new compulsion.
I found the tutorials etc.
Is there a 12 step group I can join when the wife gets back.

Thanks;
Bob

Sorry, Bob, but RockSim addiction is terminal.

Start by studying the example designs in the BARCLONE 'Design Studio' ward, and practice creating new designs of your own. It's the only known way to control the beast within.
