Estes Thunderhawk 2002
I know Estes 2002 Thunderhawk plans are posted at JimZ’s space modeling site, but the fin template doesn’t have any scale or measurements. Does anyone have or know of a better scan of the fins for this model? Thanks.

Those look like they are just Centuri Viking fins, in balsa instead of fibreboard.

Thanks! I had no idea it was on that site; it is borderline un-navigable. Quote:
Unfortunately catalog images are deceiving. Based on Scott's link, and the Viking fin image posted at rocketshoppe, the Viking fins are about half the size, with less sweep and a more acute fin-tip angle. I realize these are from an Estes Viking and not a Centuri Viking, but the fins of those two are only slightly different (body tube and nose cone differed more). https://plans.rocketshoppe.com/estes/est1949/vikfin.jpg Fortunately I won the Thunderhawk auction, so I will be able to post a side-by-side next week. |

I'm not personally familiar with the Tigerhawk but I am with the Viking (and its precursor the Cub Scout Akela rocket) and, just based on the Tigerhawk body tube size I can tell those fins ARE much larger than the Akela/Viking fins. So, if your gut feel was that the Viking fins are about half size of the Tigerhawk, you probably are not far off. Earl

Based on the info in the link in the second post, these are clearly much bigger than Viking fins. The model’s body tube is a full-length BT-50.
There is actually a ruler visible in the fin scan. The leading edge is 2 7/8 inches long. Here’s that same image with the shadows lightened in the iOS Photos app then rotated and resized so I could upload it. And I agree that web site is very frustrating.

It took me a while due to a couple household moves, but I am circling back on this.
I've attached a scan with both the Thunderhawk and Viking fins. T-Hawk are die-cut balsa; I've highlighted one of the fins in red so it can better be seen. They are larger, and have a different tip sweep/angle. Cheers! |
