Default G. Harry Stine and the Sputnik event

G. Harry Stine had just started work at the Martin Company Titan ICBM plant in Denver colorado, when on Oct 4th, 1957 The USSR launched the world's first satellite, Sputnik which shocked not only the world but especially the United States.

Attached are 2 newspaper columns from October 5th and 6th From the Rocky Mountain News in which G. Harry expresses his thoughts on the subject and his thoughts get him fired from Martin the next day.

It took me many years to track down these two .pdfs...... I wonder if the MOA has these in their Stine Archives? I guess I'll contact them and see.

hope you enjoy.

Terry,

Thanks so much for posting the links. I've known the story a long time but had never seen the actual article.

Really appreciate it.

Steve

Steve: same here. I was well aware of the story but I never knew what he said specifically. Now we all do.

Sounds like he spoke nothing but TRUTH.

That said, he should have spoken anonymously.

This is a great piece of detective work! If you want to email MOF Adjunct Curator for Space History Geoff Nunn his email address is gnunn@museumofflight.org. He will be able to distribute it as necessary. No idea if the actual newspapers exist in the GHS Collection, so we might have to hunt down copies; a formidable task!
Speaking "truth to power" is always a threat to career progression, but its often the right thing to do. Lots of people on here can attest to that!
