NASM Herb Desind Collection?
Has anyone accessed the Herb Desind Collection at the NASM for high resolution scans of the photos?
This is a (partial) list of obscure vehicles that I have drawn but could use verification of the colors and markings. A few of them Peter has drawn up already but it is always nice to find more photos to add to the scale data collective. Having accessed the collection a few times in the past I can say that some of the folders contained very little and others quite a bit. HERB DESIND Collection file folders contents: Sidewinder-Raven in color. POGO-HI pics in B&W color. Bullpup-Cajun in B&W, color. Draco in B&W, color. Hydac in B&W, color. Cree in B&W. Cleansweep in B&W. Doorknob in B&W. Exos in B&W. Jason in B&W, color. Journeyman in B&W, color. Judi-Dart in B&W. Kangaroo in BW. Loki Kiva-Dart in B&W, color. (I wonder which one it is--loki or kiva?) Nike-Asp in B&W, color. Nike-Hydac in color. NIRO in B&W,color. Nike-Javelin in B&W, color. Nike-Nike in B&W, color. Nike-Smoke in B&W,color. RPI Phoenix in B&W. Sandhawk-Tomahawk in color. TATER in B&W,color. Terrier-Hydac in B&W Terrier-Recruit in B&W. Terrier-Sandhawk*in B&W,color Terrier-Tomahawk in color. Ute/Paiute Tomahawk in B&W and color. Viper in B&W. |

I've been through parts of the Desind collection very quickly, and can't say that I'm an expert on the resources there. However, I'll share my general impression that the coverage was very wide, yet very shallow. In other words, the collection covered an immense number of subjects, but did not go into depth on any of them.
Brian Nicklas is the NASM team member with the greatest knowledge of the collection, and even wrote a book that is based largely on his findings: https://www.amazon.com/American-Mis.../dp/1848325177/ If you have specific questions about the Desind collection, Brian is your best point of contact. I have accessed a few including.....
IRIS Hydra-IRIS Metroc Arcturus Archer HAS Rigel Years ago the Flying I-Beam guys looked at Australia's LONG TOM for their NARAM model. Someone accessed the Nike-Nike-Smoke or it wouldn't have been posted on the NASM webpage. That seems to be the norm. If someone jumps through the hoops to access a folder and pay for a scan or two, then NASM goes and posts those same images on the webpage for all to access. Or at least some of them. The collection has moved from onsite to the "other fancy place" several miles away. This slows the process as somebody has to go there and get the boxes or files and bring them back. |

I was/am interested in some of the files with sounding rockets and had a wishlist all prepped and ready to drop a dime for scans - but the website said that the entire staff was away for covid and not fulfilling requests.
I haven't checked back recently.
