So Randy thinks Estes is using that wood? I'll have to listen to the podcast, I guess...

OK - I listened to the podcast, and I’m not convinced, even if Randy is. And he seemed to contradict himself by saying he couldn’t use it in sheet form and then almost immediately claiming that Estes was using it that way. If he meant blocks (and therefore nose cones) I don’t think there are any current in-production Estes kits with wood nose cones (regardless of what wood it is).

As for sheet wood - here is a close look at a scrap from the made-this-January new Estes kit I just shot the first layer of color on today. It is pretty clearly, to me, C-grain balsa about 3/32 inch thick.

If this is what Randy was calling “filona” it’s close enough to real balsa to be very much useful for fins….

I will have to go to Hobby Lobby this week and see if what I see there squares with what Randy was describing in the podcast.

Sandman made a basswood 2.6" diameter secant-ogive for my L1 Cherokee-D upscale. I've been pondering how to get an accurate 4" diameter, perhaps Python when I get to that project.

Unfortunately, Paulowania wood is expensive at more than $15 a board foot!

A 3” x 3” x 36” balsa is $32.00

A 3” x3” x36” paulowania is $33.00

Yes, I have looked into it.

Without being lower in price, that wood seems to be an almost useless replacement.
Sounds like a military blockade of Balsa from Ecuador to China is in order.
I like my Balsa the same way as my Gasoline, a CHEAP plentiful supply and don't care how that is achieved, by hook or by crook.

Yes, I'm aware of those. They're balsa. Too soft for HPR.

NOT too soft for HPR.
Coat with fibreglass and resin. Thaty'll doo.
Issue solved unless for extended supersonic flight.

Not for me! (As long as they are under 3” — my large blocks are 3”x3”, although I could glue small planks on the edges to extend them a bit.) I stocked up on balsa blocks over the past couple years, and turn mine on a lathe.

BMS still sells balsa blocks, as does SIG. They have gone up in price, but still more affordable than current pricing for large balsa cones from BMS (and eRockets, if they have any stock at all.)

I am looking forward to seeing 3D printed nose cones on Semroc kits. And with something like the Pro Cherokee, I hope they produce an accurate upscale of the Cherokee-D nose cone (55F?). I am not a fan of upscaled kits with standard ogive plastic cones, like all the upscale Goblins and DRMs. They don’t look right.

Balsa Flies Better !

Aero Glossed Balsa Flies Even Better !

I tolerate but don't like plastic cones unless molded to some unique shape like the Manta Bomber/Attack Craft Orion nose cone.
