Smile Anybody have a COX Safety Igniter ?

I'm looking for somebody that might have some COX ignters. They were unique in the annals of model rocket igniters. If anybody has one could you take some close up pics with a ruler and/or take the dimensions itself. Thanks In Advance

Hi Terry,

Here are a few photos of the Cox Safety Igniter with dimensions in millimeters. Hope this helps.

Also attached is the Cox Engine Instructions with details of the Safety Igniters.

PM me your address and I will gladly send you one of the Cox Safety Igniters for free.

Kind regards,
Jeff Jenkins

They were the ultimate in "plug and play". Mine are somewhere in an ammo box of collectable motors.

Added photo in post #2 above to show dimension from top of disk to end of igniter base for reference.

That’s an interesting igniter but I don’t remember them. When were they available?

Early '70s timeframe. They plugged into a holder, so there weren't any microclips. I would just unfold the metal strips to use with a standard launch system.

Too often, the blob of pyrogen on the head was a bit too big for the nozzle throat. Or the head broke off up inside the nozzle which often jammed the nozzle with the useless head, requiring for picking or other work to remove it.

The idea was nice, but needed some refinement, like a version 2 (Also the very thin metal contact "blades" on the sides that plugged into the socket, sometimes rode up and did not go into the socket).

Last fall, I made some homemade ignitors that use Estes plugs, with two tiny holes for a nichrome wire with a coiled head to be CA'ed in place. I added pyrogen to the coil. Photo below is before adding the pyrogen.
