The initial release of the 2157 kit had vacuformed fins. The last release of the 2157 had styrene fins. Estes offered the styrene fin kit for substituting on older kits (actually listed as replacements for the 2157 and 1969). My 2157 kits are all old, so I bought several sets. The styrene fin kits are $6.99.
The resin kits look pretty nice, but the styrene kits are decent if you are looking for an inexpensive upgrade.

I got a couple of sets of the styrene fins for the 2157 from John Boren at NSL in Alamogordo. One pair got installed on the 2157 I got built this year. It has two flights, both on Aerotech E28s, both of which went very nicely.
I would expect resin fins would be adding even more mass where you don't want it.

Fair points both BARGeezer and Verna. From those weights, you've around 1.5 ounces more at the aft end using the resin parts vs. the styrene fins and the vacuformed fairings.
I packed the CM with clay on the 2157 as I built it with a 29mm mount. Then when I saw how much ballast it would take to use the 29mm BP E/F motors I decided to back off (but left things so I could get in there if I change my mind). So far it's flown twice—both flights nice and straight—on E28 reloads. It scoots off the rod in a rather un-Saturn-V-like fashion, but it gets high enough to properly deploy those three parachutes and look really cool on the way back down. I had intended the 2157 build to be sort of a "dry run" for doing a 1969 for the Apollo 11 50th. Maybe I'll get the 1969 done for the Apollo 17 50th.....

I shot the white enamel before I left for NC and I've now returned. The white is dry and rock-hard.
All remaining painting will be done by hand. TBC

The fins and lower black sections of the booster have now been hand painted by "The Vixen".

She does a great job of painting by hand using Testors enamels. I cannot see any brush marks, does she thin the paint? Multiple coats?
