Default Triva: What food was first eaten in space?

Trivia: What food was first eaten in space by an American astronaut?

I belong to an internet thingy that sends daily trivia to my e-mail.

This was one of the questions the other day.
I got it wrong.

No prizes, just bragging rights.

No cheating or looking it up, I didn't, so you can't !

pastrami on rye comes to mind.

*edit*
'nope I was wrong', he said after looking it up. the sandwich incident didn't occur until Gemini (and it wasn't pastrami).

Probably on Vostok 2. Vostok 1 only went one orbit, but Titov did not go 24 hours with nothing to eat. He probably pastes of different flavors ate out of a tube.

That one was John Young and a corned beef sandwich. Don't know about the OP's trivia question, though.

I know that Glenn ate applesauce from a squeeze tube aboard Friendship 7...not sure if that was the *first* food, however...

Comrades:

Yuri ate meat and chocolate from squeeze tubes and Gherman spent most of the time throwing up. But I have no idea what Big Al had. It was Cinco de Mayo so maybe he had Mexican.

"The Vixen" guesses chocolate pudding. I'm guessing peanut butter.

Well, the question was AMERICAN space food. Does feeding the chimps bananas count?
