Saturn History
Tomorrow marks the anniversary of the first Saturn V launch. On Nov 9, 1967, the unmanned Apollo IV lifted off with a full palate of tests to perform. Structural integrity, heat shield and thermal seal integrity, reentry operations, launch loads and dynamics, stage separation, rocket subsystems, emergency detection system, and mission support facilities all passed with flying colors.
Those of you that didn't finish your Saturns before the July 20 anniversary have a reprieve! It's time to fly if your weather cooperates.

The CBS coverage of this launch is one of my favorite 'Cronkite' moments, as he reported the tremendous sound energy of liftoff from the CBS booth at the LC-39 Press Site, about 3.5 miles from the pad. Obviously, no one had ever witnessed a Saturn V launch before, so there wasn't a really good idea of the exact acoustic effects.
The excitement in his voice is evident in the follow video of CBS's coverage of the launch, beginning at about 1:48. The light output from the Saturn just overloads the aperture settings on the TV cameras. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uoVfZpx5dY Earl

It still amazes me the first Saturn V flew great, the second flight had several serious failures but managed to get to orbit, then the third flight was Apollo 8 putting men on board and sending them to the Moon!!
I can't imagine the booster engineer's pucker factor after stating "yes we fixed all the problems" and then being told "ok, the next flight is going to the Moon with people on board"! They *all* were steely-eyed missile men!! |

Thanks for the link to the great video, Earl.
They DEFINITELY were "Steely Eyed Missile Men" that we most certainly won't ever see the likes of again. WAYYYYYYY too much focus is placed on costs and mamby-pamby safety instead of exploration and getting the job done.

Yes, there is most certainly a lack of intestinal fortitude. and when we have Medicare for all, there will not be enough money to launch a bottle rocket.
