I appreciate all the helpful replies, thank you.

Just to be clear, the thread was really intended to be about the history of shock cord mounts, with the major kit transition from slit tube (and its variants) to the tri-fold norm. And about building for a particular era. And I got a lot of nice information and help on this, thank you again.

It was not about aesthetics or personal preferences, but thanks anyway.

Yeah, I didn't really think it was....but I had to comment on agreeing with GH since it doesn't happen that often it seems....

Interestingly, when I was looking at early K-kit instructions on line while writing my tri-fold post, I found that the BT-55 V-2 (K-22) which predates the tri-fold used a knotted shock cord held down piece of guaze and glue on the inside of the tube. I expect this was to avoid the look of the two slits spoiling the outside of a scale model. I expected to find the tri-fold in a later version but both that I found showed the gauze method.

That IS interesting about the gauze, and your theory about scale model priorities makes sense.
