Read a bit of Xacto history just a bit ago that I was not really clear about relative to when Hunt Manufacturing took over.

At some point in the 1970s (not sure exactly when; maybe early 70s I think), Xacto was purchased by CBS. What I just read was that Hunt then bought Xacto from CBS in March, 1981.

The other part I have not been sure about is when Xacto left their long-standing Long Island City, NY location where they had been located for a number of decades. It seems that in April, 1985 Hunt Manufacuring moved the Xacto operations from Long Island City to their Statesville, NC manufacturing location.

At some point later Hunt sold Xacto to Elmer (the glue people), but I have not been able to find out when. Not sure either that Xacto went directly from Hunt to Elmer.

Thanks for posting Scott.

This catalog is very little changed from the 1991 Xacto catalog we already have, but it is another one for the 'library'. It is interesting to note that their production plants, as shown on the back cover, are all still in the USA as of this catalog. I would have thought that possibly by the 1990s their stuff would have all been imported. The 1997 catalog that I am working on scanning now does not list any 'plant' information, so one could assume that by the late 90s, Xacto production had been sent overseas.

Wow, this thread has 24,612 views so far and counting! My guess is other X-Acto collectors have linked to this thread.

Would really like to find the #1G and #2G retractable knife handles that appear in the 1960 catalog.

I think you are right. I suspect this is the biggest Xacto catalog repository on the web. Actually, maybe the ONLY repository. I have searched many times and I have found no other location that has these catalogs.

Again, thanks for hosting them for us!

Got ‘84, ‘85, and ‘86 catalogs coming. Obviously, not in the heart of the vintage era that we are most interested in, but Xacto history ‘data points’ nonetheless. Will scan and submit to Scott as I can work through them once received.

Sounds good. Keep 'em coming.
Would really like to see 61 thru 64 to see when the 1G and 2G handle availability ended.
I have a feeling those are going to be really hard finds.
