Default Looking for a scan of the Mars Snooper II kit face card.

Looking for a scan of the "Mars Snooper II" kit panel if anyone has one. A scan through the bag is okay if it can be cleaned up in GIMP.

Thanks,
Don

Yes, that's the one but I need it in a higher resolution.

The others I found Googling were in the bag pics at places like Seated Dime and Worthpoint. Probably even less clear. Hopefully someone reading here actually has the kit/card for you.

Default GIMP is AWESOME!

So I decided to take the low res scan (attached above) and see what I could do with it in GIMP:

How in the world does that GIMP decipher text that is basically unreadable (in some parts of the original image at least) and render it out correctly? And parts of the rocket, too: “Mars Snooper” on the side of the rocket look like nothing more than what smudges. Just amazing….

Like Bernard, I’ve never used GIMP (I don’t even really know what it is), but if it can do such as this, I too need to look into it further.

Thank you for that demonstration, I am convinced.

I've now downloaded GIMP and opened the old low res Mars Snooper II image - that is the easy part. Alas, I don't see a big red button called "clean up low res model rocket face card" or similar. Can you share with us, what are a couple of the most important operations (tools, filters, etc.) for novices to learn first, to ease the learning curve? Please and thank you!

All, I was able to follow this (basic) tutorial, though I seem to be one step shy of doing it correctly - and seeing changes. Getting there.

Default GIMP is not a magic wand

I'm sorry if I led any of you to believe that this was some kind of quick automated process. This "clean-up" took me over 5 hours to do.

Basically I had to reconstruct each character of text by hand or import it from another file. I was able to "steal" letters from my scans of the Honest John face card and the Shrike face card. In fact, all of the lower portion with the kit data was "lifted" from the Honest John face card and modified character by character for the differences.

The image of the rocket itself came from JimZ's scan of the instruction sheet which has the same image as the face card in a higher resolution.

GIMP = Graphical Image Manipulation Program

It is raster based, so not really that great for upscaling. For that you want a vector graphics tool such as Corel Draw or Adobe Illustrator (both of which are expensive). GIMP is a free tool that makes restorations such as the one above possible if you are willing to learn the tool, be a little creative and put in the time.

Hope that answers your questions,
Don
