I guess the new Estes kits are real.

I have bought a few of them.

Hobby Bench in Phoenix has them.

I was just there and bought a Phoenix Bird to remind myself of all the fun I had flying Centuri products growing up in Phoenix.

And for those who don't know, Hobby Bench is owned by Lee Piester who owned Centuri. So what more appropriate place to buy a Phoenix Bird? Last time I was there I bought a couple of Semroc versions of Centuri classics.

By the way, a while back someone posted some great pictures of the rockets hanging from the ceiling at Hobby Bench. It's a truly amazing collection and well worth a visit to the store just for that. I searched for the thread with the pics but couldn't find it. Anybody recall where it is?

To kill some time, I went looking yesterday. Zip. Nada. Nothing. I went to a LHS, who may not always have the latest and greatest, but isn't totally out of touch, and they had only starter sets which I didn't pay much attention to. Then stopped at Walmart, and couldn't find any rockets at all. So far, of all the new 2009 stuff, I've seen a few of the new builders' kits and picked up one of the Taser Twins, but haven't seen any of the more recent vintage stuff.

Not sure what the deal is with Walmart and elsewhere, but the products ain't getting on the shelves very quickly around here.

Which store were you in Steve? I worked in the 19th & Northern store and the Paradise Valley mall store. I built several models for the PV store and heard that one closed, you may have been looking at some models I built back in 1989 .

Bob, did you check out the photo model of the Reflector? I think they need to hire YOU to build some photo models .

I've noticed the same thing around here, too.

Scott,

I was at the 19th ave and Northern store. The PV Mall store has been closed.

Really great models hanging from the ceiling including a Skylab, Taurus, Merc Redstone, starship Vega, old yellow Big bertha, and a host of others.

I didnt take many pics because someone here or on TRF posted a bunch of pics a while back. If i remember correctly, Lee gave permission for the models to be taken down for the pics. Its very possible some of what i saw were ones you built. They were all exceptionally well done and well taken care of. No missing pieces, etc.

I was also impressed at the large selection of Estes, Semroc, and Quest kits on the wall. Way better than any of my local general hobby stores.

Steve

Bummer. That Paradise Valley store was very much like the Toys by Roy store I grew up with. Many pleasant memories whenever I got a chance to drop by.
