Default Challenger Remembrance Day

As many will probably recall, today is the 34th anniversary of the loss of the space shuttle Challenger.

Yesterday was the 53rd anniversary of the Apollo 1 fire. And...this coming Saturday will be the 17th anniversary of the loss of the space shuttle Columbia.

I did a memorial balloon release with commemorative document at 11:38 this morning, sync’d to an audio commemoration program I put together some 24 years ago and modified to add additional material and songs after the Columbia loss. It is a salute to all three crews, and contains audio sound bites, presidential speech segments, mission control audio, etc., topped off with the launch audio of Challenger up through and including the “Challenger, go at throttle-up” call, with the opening chords of Lee Greenwood’s God Bless the USA beginning to bleed in as the crew radios back “Roger, go at throttle-up”. At that point, the balloons are released, and generally, so are the tears as Lee works his way through the opening lines of his song. The piece ends with 17 sequential ship bell tones, one for each member of those three crews.

If you have not done so already, take time to remember, in your own way, those who gave ‘the last full measure’ to help pave the way to space, the moon, and beyond.

Fair winds and following seas to the crews of Apollo 1, STS-51L, amd STS-107.

Here is a link to NASA’s day of remembrance which was held today. They do this each year in January to honor the Apollo 1, Challenger, and Columbia crews.

I went to visit Christa's grave in Concord, NH just a few weeks ago.
I left her a plastic rose and said a prayer for all.

That was a very nice gesture and I am sure a moving visit. I looked up her gravesite on Find a Grave. That is a very impressive headstone they provided for her. I see that her parents are now both gone, her Dad in 1990 and her Mother only a couple years ago.

Do you know whether any of her family is local there any longer; children or siblings possibly?

Earl,
As far as I know, the family still reside in Concord, NH.

I have two long stories of meeting Christa and her family.

Ok, thanks. Well, share away if you are so inclined. I met her backup, Barbara Morgan, back in 1990 at the Hubble telescope launch aboard Discovery. At that time she did not know if she would go up on a mission or not, but did eventually over 20 years after Christa in 2007.
