Wax Donutz are still used.
Thankfully, they allow for a "Touch O' REEK".

Latrines are SUPPOSED TO STINK. I aim for unbearable RETCH-INDUCING STENCH.

When we remodeled the master bathroom 20 years ago, we put ceramic tile in place of the linoleum that was in there originally. When I re-installed the toilet, I could feel that it was not seating on the wax ring. The flooring guys had put the tile way too close to the flange. It took me several minutes to figure out that all I needed to do was put a double wax ring down and bolt it up. At first I thought I was gonna have to chip out the brand new tile around it.

Those wax sealing rings are supposed to be just a bit loose to allow stench to flow back into the room.

I used a Danco Perfect seal when I pulled and replaced my toilet last time. Recommended by my plumber...

The Seymour Butts gasket was mentioned near the top of thread.
Getting to be hard to find.

The "Perfect Seal" brand seals too well and doesn't let the proper amount of STINK EMANATION into the restroom.

I don't remember if it's the same brand, but I've used that style gasket with great success - much better than wax.
Plus, it's reusable. Handy if you may need to R&R the toilet several times (I had to keep the toilet functional when I re-did the tile in my bathroom, so it got removed and replaced several times over a several day period.
