LOL, good call, John. I asked Taras and here is his response. As to Shand and Canaroc (Roger Lufkin), as far as I know they did not do business together. The Canaroc (Irwin Group/Toy) that I worked for did not. Shand did not last too long, great product but not too good on a distribution system. Looking back, I should have approached him to market his motors. Like I said before his igniters were a work of art. Very nicely done and labour intensive. Motors had a wrap around label and nice nozzle. |

Steve- Thanks for running down this info and posting the pdfs. Interesting. And these are/were composite motors? Relatively long burn times for ported composite motors! Any idea the formulation? Earl

Thanks, Steve. I wonder if there are any photos or even motors still around in collections? Kaplow hasn't been on YORF in years, but lives fairly far north and has a big motor collection. I may try to contact him.

My great thanks to Taras for his help with this. For those of you unfamiliar with him, Taras was a very long ago representative of Estes in Canada. It was great fun at NARCON last month to sit around the hotel fire pit with Taras and Dane Boles and listen to them talk about the very early days of Estes in Canada.
Taras then moved on to Canaroc (which then became SMI). After that folded, Taras formed ARG (Advanced Rocketry Group) which did fantastic kits of the Black Brandt series as well as some of the Centuri sounding rockets. ARG was subsequently sold to Sunward in 2013 but they are currently not producing any of the kits. Taras was also formerly the head of the Canadian Association of Rocketry. Taras is currently the team manager for the Canadian FAI team. He and his great team just competedwith us at the Arizona Cup last month. Taras often serves as a Jury Member at those events as well. He almost always kicks my butt in S2P, Precision Altitude and Duration (the FAI TARC-like event). Final Taras note. Taras is also a member of the NAR. In October of 2019 Taras set a new C Altimeter Altitude record for C Division! In sum, great rocketeer, wonderful friend. I really appreciate his help with this info about Shand Industries. I don't know about you guys, but this is a little bit like witnessing an archeologist discovering a lost civilization to me.
And Steve, send my thanks to Taras!

Yes, VERY interesting to learn all this. I simply missed them back in the day. Again, are/were these composite motors? Interesting burn times, if so. Earl
