Default Dope joys

Or did I really need to buy on the cheap-50% off
SIG Sanding sealer and Supercoat? Actually, the Aerogloss balsa filler is awesome stuff but I've stopped using it now that winter weather is here. SIG fumes IMHO are much less noxious to my nose and Wife Even in my vented paint booth, Aerogloss is just too smelly to leave dry. Also I'm stumped as to why the SIG stuff is so thick and would like to know if you would use the sealer or super coat as the base coat on my new hornet balsa NC. When I went to SIG's webiste, I read that "two coats of clear dope followed by the sanding sealer" was recommended but thought that the supercoat was a protective finish. Thanks again for your help, Guys-Jeff

I don't use it, but I think SIG Supercoat IS a gloss finishing coat.
Even though it's almost winter in IL, I still use the Aerogloss in the garage. The fumes help to brighten my day! My wife says "it stinks!" The nerve. She goes around spraying Fabreeze on everything---now THAT S**T DOES stink!

Oh, and speaking of "Hornet", check out the balsa nose cone on the Semroc Magnum Hornet I just finished. This is why I use Aerogloss. I know there's other ways to achieve similar results, but Aerogloss is my preference.

Bear in mind--I'm never TOO proud. I never post photos of my finishing disasters. Such as:

-when I used SIG supercoat over lacquer on a BBII.
-when I tried to sand a balsa V2 nose cone with a palm sander while drinking Scotch.
-or when I ignored Quest's instructions and used Aerogloss on the syrofoam nose cone of an MLAS (no Scotch).

Or when I used dope over FnF

Scotch or no scotch, power sanders and balsa aren't a good match

I have to be extremely careful not to oversand (ie, flat spot) balsa sanding by hand. I imagine you can make a mess real fast with a palm sander

You betcha! The palm sander basically turned the V2 nose cone into a nose obelisk. The Scotch probably didn't help.

Thats funny stuff. I just wish I'd known about the inadvisability of combining scotch and....well...ANYTHING 30 years ago. It would have saved me all kinds of divorce lawyer fees. What was I thinking??

Aero Gloss Balsa Fillercoat is the most "stinky" of all their dopes.
It seems to have a certain additional solvent component I have not been able to pin down.
Their Clear, Colors, and Sanding Sealer dont seem to "reek" as much, but I don't mind any of the aromas.
The only way one can use Aero Gloss or any other brand dope over FnF is to coat the object first with Pactra Prep, which is now extremely rare to find. I use thinned plastic wood instead as that filler is solvent based and compatible with dope.

Styrofoam is NEVER dope compatible. Dope dissolves it almost immediately !
