"Miracle" Redstone
I started a new thread as to put the pics in one place.
I Finally finished the K-41 Mercury Redstone ! In my last post, my next big concern was those nearly 50 year old decals. One small trial piece disintegrated when I tested it. So I sprayed the decal sheet with 3 coats of Testors Decal Bonder. Lo, they WORKED ! This was very tedious work. The decals were very unforgiving. I got only one chance, with little time to position them. I put a few drops of dish liquid in the warm water I used. You could see and feel the thick coat of the Bonder barely holding them together. But they slid on after I slowly moved them back n forth on the paper. I dodged a big bullet here. But I’m really happy with the results. Not meaning to boast, but I finally got to build one last kit in my time, which also was my Second Kit Ever. I can also happily say the job I did was not only a huge improvement over my 68 one, but I did some of my best work here, in a very long time. So, if I never build another kit, I can rest happily knowing I did a great job on this one. Too bad there’s not a "mrmissile fan club" ( o lord !) , as this would be the Must Have Kit. Thanks for your interest and comments/letters. Just some minor touching up to do after the decals dry a few days. Plus some Clear Coat. Read my previous posts to see the entire build from the beginning. I intentionally put that dreaded Launch Lug on as I intend to fly it some day. The paint is shiny in the light, but I used Flat, and Semi Gloss. ( WOW,,, This Kit is 100% Original ! ) ....sorry, I’m just happy ! Thank You again CHAS RUSSELL for the kit. Are you watching ?! Dan.

I still need to build a "stick" tower for a LJII, and dreading it. The Redstone's is even smaller . . .

I built it with that intent. But if I do,it’ll be hard to bring myself to,,,but that’s what the LL is for, just in case. It won’t be any time soon, tho.....

Excellent job and great tip about using the Testor 's Decal Bonding spray, I'll probably have to do the same when I get around to building my K-41 model.
In fact, when I built this kit the first time around 1970 or so, the first 2 decal sheet from those kits easily came apart when I tried to use them. Wrote to Estes and they sent (twice) new decal sheets before I got one to work properly.

Just to be safe, I was ordering more Testors decal paper to make copies, but learned it has been Discontinued ! I’m not sure about the Spray Bonder. I did order some other brand, called Koala, which ironically arrived today. It says use Rustoleum Crystal Clear to use it with. I don’t know if Or what the difference in the Testors was. But it was good stuff. ( any acrylic or clear enamel will work) So, if I’ll be making any more decals, I’ll literally be starting over again ( suggestions welcome !). Seems certain type decals last forever, while only a few years. Also logical that most sny clear would hold it together long enough to work. Some people use Klear floor wax, I have not tried it yet. If you find a good alternative, let me know. Meanwhile, thanks for your comment and letter. Stay in touch if you can. I enjoy your letters. Thanks ! Dan. PS, when you Do start your K-41,,, TAKE YOUR TIME !.... And if you find any Testors spray,,, GRAB IT. It goes a Long Way......

Dan PS,,, I just now caught your play on words here.... "Original Issue Model rocketeer " , HA. Yeah, that’s me, inna nut shell. Good, Steve, good. btw, I’m a Gus Grissom fan, too.....
