Following a long winter slump in rocket building, I've taken hold of an interesting new project - conversion of the AMT Artemis I in 1/200 scale.

Rather than post the details here, the build thread can be followed on my rocketry blog linked below.

I haven't done a PMC since the late 1970s, so this is quite a fun diversion.

I would certainly appreciate any tips or helpful hints in the comments section.

If so, how do they compare in accuracy and detailing?

No, I don't have the Estes version.
Looking at pics of the Estes offering, it appears that they might be comparable in detailing.
Estes' paint scheme does not appear to have the light orange paint detailing on the core rocket as can be done on the AMT model. They went with a solid dark orange.
All of the markings and patterns on the SRBs look very similar.

I looked at the AMT model in my LHS not too long ago. You can certainly use it to make a better looking model than the Estes version. If you want to put in the work.

I intend to paint the SLS core vehicle with as much of the color detail as possible. That light orange will be the kicker - airbrush required!

There are lots of great NASA images online that can serve as a good guide to the paint detail.

At this point of the build I am keeping a close watch on the model's weight. Right now it's slightly over 5.5 oz. I think by the time I factor in all the small details, plastic fins, motor, nose weight, parachute, etc., this bird is going to be into D motor territory.

I haven't put the model in RockSim yet, but I did make a cardboard profile cut out, including a representation of the size of plastic fins I might need. I've at least established a ballpark location of the CP.
