Default Estes Tazz Build

I decided to build another new rocket from Estes, the Tazz. I built the rocket and sealed the balsa with 3 coats of balsa sealer on the first day. The instructions say nothing about adding fillets, but I added them for extra security. The tape hinges are a little tricky and I don't really know if you need tape hinges on both sides of the fins. The old Gyroc only has one hinge on each side and that may work just fine on the Tazz. The next day I sprayed a coat of white primer, sanded smooth and shot Rustoleum Professional Gloss white. If the rocket is dried after 24 hours I will apply the decals and call her done, not bad for a 72 hour build. The wood in this kit is not the traditional heavy balsa that Estes has been adding to their kits lately. The balsa in this kit is soft and light, good for keeping the weight down.

Here she is all done, the paint was dry to touch after 24 hours, so I applied the decals. Not bad for a 72 hour build, not 72 hours of build time but 3 days from start to finish. The weight as shown without motor is 1.3 oz. The package recommended weight is 1.3 oz. Like I said earlier the balsa in this kit was real light and soft. I also kept the weight down by using dope based balsa sealer, one coat of non filler primer and one coat of gloss white. The engine mount pops out with the streamer and the flaps deploy causing the rocket to spin downward. During the downtime I am still building my vintage balsa Comet kits.
