Nope, they're secured via the vintage Estes tri-fold cardstock method. The black tape is just a cover over them. Parachutes used for this section are three 24" plastic parachutes. The baffle system protected the chutes very well. Pic below is the main section during recovery:

Thanks, me too and I agree! Can't beat a Saturn.

After dozens of flights we have tons of great photos. The first one was taken about 14 years ago by Ray Cole back when he was president of HARA. The 2nd is one Randy got on a windless day.

An E15 or E20 central with BP outboards is asking for trouble, white-lightning is the hardest to light of all Aerotech propellants.

At 20 oz, a D12-3 and 4 C6 motors should be fine, assuming the CG is already sufficient - that's roughly 10:1 thrust:weight, 48fps off a 5' rod, and 430' apogee.

I plugged 2 of the outboard tubes on my 5 motor SV, and use epoxy plugged C6-0s in those tubes, giving me 3 tubes with ejection charges. Is it too late to add 18mm motor tubes up through the top bulkhead? If it's built, I'd personally glue in plugs and either kick the outboards, or use plugged C6-0 outboards.

Be sure to use good starters for the Estes motors when clustering, not the ones that come with them - I like the "BP Rocket Starters" from electricmatch.com, but there are other options.

If you want more thrust, a CTI E22 or E31 would work well with BP outboards - CTI motors light just as fast as BP due to the E-Match/Starter Pellet combo they use. I've done this a number of times.

Another higher-thrust option is a D12 central and Q-Jet C12 or D16 outboards. Q-Jets cluster well with BP motors - I've flown my SV on D12-3 + 2xC6-0 + 2xC12-4. One benefit of the Q-Jets is the ejection charge can be easily removed if needed.

EJECT the outboard motors.
Bulkhead the tubes so they kick out.
Do not vent them into anything. That will cause nothing but trouble.
If your field has some mamby-pamby rule against it, glue s streamer to the top of each motor and kick them anyway.

Where appropriate, I advocate for being a BLATANT RULE VIOLATOR.

You can tape a steamer into the top of the motor making it legal. Then it will come in much faster than tumbling, go figure.
