A few more pics, from the same source.

Yup, those are probably the only accessible images of the model in flight. The fellow who was helping John as part of "Team Estes" may have taken some, and Tom Beach (editor of Sport Rocketry) may have some as well. My wife and I were too far away to do better than those.

The second image of it being loaded on the pad (fourth image in the first picture post you made) reminds me of another someone we've lost, as that's Jonathan Dunbar with John Boren.

I guess Navaho scale models should get flight points for *not* pranging (successful flights of the full-scale ones were rarer than unicorns' eye teeth). Today's R/C airplane stability augmentation systems (my UMX Micro Radian motorglider https://www.horizonhobby.com/produc...m/EFLU2980.html has one; it enables the 730 mm wingspan "micro" version to handle as well as the larger [with more inertia, too], 2 m wingspan "standard" Radian in gusty conditions) would be helpful to scale B/Gs (and/or RGs) such as the Navaho.

Maybe I'm an old fuddy-duddy purist, but such electronic trickery sorta smells (to me) like it goes against the spirit of these competitions.

Maybe start a new, separate contest for "electronic stability assisted/enhanced"?

That sounds reasonable. There are certain scale prototypes that are of such configurations (like the Navaho), or have very small and/or forward-mounted fins, or have no fins at all, that scale models of them simply won't fly well (or at all) without stability augmentation systems. These systems are very small (an inch or so) and lightweight (~10 grams or less), and are very reliable; they can also be adjusted to cater to ambient wind conditions. Finless scale models, such as (to give just two examples) of the Minuteman III and the Atlas-Agena, would ascend smoothly, as if they had fins (so could their upper stages, if they too were powered by model rocket motors).
