Earl, I assume the seller you're referring to is yelbinort. Check out the prices of his other items.........all ridiculously high. Heck, he wants 6 bucks for 3 estes igniters! Plus shipping, of course. So, not sure I believe that the going price for an old Estes shuttle kit is in the $300 neighborhood.

Estes changed the instructions of the green face card 1284 kit sometime in the mid 1980s to paint the ET reddish brown instead of white. The green header card never changed colors of the ET.
In the final release of the kit it was called the "Masters Series" Space Shuttle kit.
That version had a completely different header panel, showing the ET in reddish brown.

While I think that seller has about zero chance getting $300 for a 1284 Shuttle kit, they do regularly fetch over $200 which is still ridiculous for a high production kit that still has many floating around in sealed condition.

Yeah, that is him; prices do seem to be high. I just sent him an email and asked if he would kindly explain the reference to the tank colors as it applies to these two kits. I’ll post his response here, assuming he replies. Hopefully he will.

Ok, this makes a little more sense. He says he had a photo mixup and the one that had the “red fuel tank” now has the correct photo for it, which is the Masters Series version.

Link here to his auctions...you can see the two shuttle kits offered: https://www.ebay.com/sch/yelbinort_...=p2047675.l2562

So, what he has is one of the older, original shuttle kits (white fuel tank, as he says) and the other is the Masters Series version with the “red fuel tank”, as he says.

THAT makes sense now.

He wants the ridiculous sum off $230 for a Tartar kit.
The last one of those I saw sell went for around $75.

With a bit of patience, they can be picked up for a little over $100, if you don't need MIP. Those buy-it-now listings are just to catch the unsuspecting, or those who just has to have it now. A couple other sellers do the same thing, and probably make quite a few sales that way. These are certainly not the going price.

Yes, I've stalked overpriced bits and pieces (sometimes for months) before they were changed to auctions. I just bought a Centuri Skylab nose cone for $5 that had been BIN for the longest time at $25. An auction shows the real market value of things.
