That's what happens with unreliable CHINESE sourcing.

Jeff, have you watched James Duffy’s YouTube painting video on the DARC-1? I don’t have the kit yet, but James is responsible for me getting back into airbrushing. Not to mention investing in another airbrush, and at least $100 in Tamiya acrylic paints.

Love the acrylics. I have used them over Tamiya lacquer, Rustoleum enamels, and unknown older paints (practicing on older rockets).

I like Tamiya Lacquer.
I wouldn't use water base acrylic nonsense to paint anything via brush or airbrush.
No VOC base=NO PAINT in my book.

Amazing how these threads get way off topic. Anyway, it seems Estes has the Super Mars Snooper and the Vesta Intruder kits in their warehouse. They are shipping them to hobby distributors (actually one distributor got them already). Strange that they haven't made the available for sale on their website yet.

All the balsa is 3/32" thick. Not sure if the nose cone would be sold my itself.

I’ve not watched the video. I first painted the cone and the boost unit winter gray. I then masked off and painted the boost unit’s fins and the cone’s nose section dark gray. I’ll do the remaining painting by hand when I return from CA. As for the inside of the plastic cone, I’ll ask “The Vixen” to hand paint it in a flat, neutral color—possibly VERY light gray.

Tamiya acrylics are not water-based, they are solvent-based. They dry super fast.

and..............................viola!

Here's my treatment of the DARC-1. Now THAT was one tough build! (very refreshing, actually)

"The Vixen" hand painted the inside of the plastic skirt with MM flat neutral gray. The black canopy and black belly shield I freehanded with gloss enamel.
