Default Estes Red Flare Build from Black Friday 2019

I wanted a Red Flare since it was introduced but the list price for an E2X Kit was not worth it to me. I thought the prismatic tube and black were a neat combo that reminded me of 80’s LOC kits. In the Black Friday sale they were 65% off, going for less than $10 so I got a couple. I wanted to build it on the day it arrived but was having a water heater put in so it sat for a few days. Yesterday I assembled it and my only issue is the ID of the tube is pretty large. I thought about mods but built it stock. I will need to either add tape to the nosecone shoulder, but instead I’ll probably glue a strip of paper inside the top of the tube since it’s so thin. I used Beacon Fabri Tac as suggested on Chris’s blog for plastic to paper joints and it worked great but beware strings when lifting the tip. I am not sure about the decal yet. I hope I can fly it at the park this weekend.

The Beacon Fabri-Tac glue is very handy for builds that have plastic-to-paper joints. I used it the other day to bond the nose cone to the body tube on a Luna Bug.

Yep, the Fabri-Tac is like the old tube plastic glue I used on plastic models in the 1960s. That stuff would "string" when you pulled the tube away from the glued area. I think the Fabri-Tac might be a little thicker than the old plastic model tube glue.

The thickness was a big help, since the fit of the tube was very loose. Thanks for the tip, and thanks for your blog I read it daily.

Good sized spiffy looking kit. Goes together in one evening, no wood to fill, prime, and sand. Pre-finished body, my kind of rocket. Good straight flight on its' maiden, no damage.
But was it enough of a challenge for your craftsmanship skills, 5X7?

My only craftsmanship Skill is drowning something in filler primer and sanding the heck out of it.
The pictures don't show the glue smudges on the fins.

Yesterday I glued a strip of bond into the top of the airframe to snug up the nose. I couldn't find a permanent glue stick so I ended up using an old credit card to smear a thin layer of wood glue then carefully worked the paper around and used the nose cone to set it. The pics show the fit test before gluing. It's done unless I decide to add decals.

It's a nice looking E2X, and flies great on E12-4 motors. I was a little concerned about the fin attachment, so added a thin bead of medium CA along either side of the fin-tube joint. I'll have to try the fabric-tac - I've been using medium CA for paper-plastic joints, so far it's been working well.

Do you use the plastic parachute? I added some elastic from the nc to the chute.

I used the stock chute, just cut out a modest spill hole, and also used the rubber shock cord w/ tri-fold mount. Usually, I'll upgrade estes kits with kevlar to the MMT, and a Top Flight nylon chute, but wanted to keep this one a pure stock $10 rocket. Flying on an $8 motor
