My son, home from college, needed a challenge, so he too took on the Mars 2020 Atlas V 541. Here are the results:

Details on the build:
Nose cone is a hand-modified cone from eRockets. Payload fairing is BT-80. Boattail is a highly modified boattail from one of our Aggressor Aerospace kits. Main tube is ST-18 (1.84" OD). It has a pair of 18mm motors. Photo shows them from the side, so you see only one. Did NOT try to replicate the aft end to scale. The heat shield on this model is just a cylinder, not the more complex shape on the actual vehicle. LOX feedline is styrene plastic. The avionics pod and cable raceway are present, but can't be seen in this photo. SRBs are BT-20, with 13mm motor mounts, which is why the nozzles are not to scale (lengths are correct, throat should be thinner). SRBs are mounted in the scale, asymmetric configuration. SRB canted ogive cones were done by Boyce Aerospace Hobbies. Feel free to order more from Alex and Sheree - he'll do any scale you like. Decals are printed on our home printer. I have extras if anybody wants a set. Since my son and I both hate permanently attached clear plastic fins, the model has a detachable "fin box," which screws into the base of the model. Easily removed for display. Fin box isn't done, so not sure when it will fly!! |
