Wasp Boost/Glider Build
A new glider model in the Blasfromthpast fleet!
With my propensity for losing B/Gs on fly-aways, I'm a glutton for punishment with this one. Some of you old-timers may recognize this model as the Marc McReynolds design from the pages of Model Rocketry Magazine, December 1970. More details here: https://castlerocketeer.blogspot.co...29-wasp-bg.html

Very nice.
I built that model from the Model Rocketry magazine plans in the 1980s. I believe I Monokoted the wings. Never flew it on anything bigger than an 'A' motor.

This is the model I'm flying for 1/2A BG in the NAR's National Rocketry Competition (NRC). It won me the C Division NRC 1/2A BG title in 2018.

That is really cool. It's nice to see that many of the old B/G designs are still quite capable of holding their own in modern-day competition.
By the way, check out my blog post on the Wasp if you haven't done so already. Mark McReynolds himself posted a reply yesterday and gave a good bit of history and insightt into the Wasp design.

I wonder how it would fly if converted to 13mm? WIth the reduced drag on the pod, it would go higher.

13mm would definitely work better due to reduced drag and weight, as you have pointed out.
When starting this build, I contemplated using a 13mm pod, but decided to stay true to the original, instead.

Ed, nice looking glider. Maybe a 1/2A motor for it’s maiden flight?
Just sayin’ ... I’ve witnessed you wandering big, open soccer fields tracking gliding things.

Thanks, Lee
Yep, this one will likely never see an A motor. Even with a 1/2A, just the right thermal action can be detrimental. You should have been there at Dove Valley two years ago this September: Maiden flight of a Flatcat... B42....perfect trim....Gone! The bird didn't lose any perceptible altitude as it glided downrange and out of view. You'd think I would learn.....

All of my Wasps have flown in 13MM engines and they work just fine.
