I always thought it was odd that the paper decals on the Vampire and Banshee call out the 1/2A3-2T. Yet it is not a recommended engine. Too heavy for a 1/2A IMO.

I designed the E2X version that was called the Banshee.
It had nothing to do with the earlier injection molded RTF that was called the Banshee. I am not familiar with any other Estes rocket that used the original injection molded Banshee parts. Matt |

Wasn't the Gnome a re-hash of one of these ?

Somewhere in my collection I have a red colored test shot of the Vampire/Jinx made in the late 1990s.
While I can't be sure at this moment I MAY also have a test shot of the RTF Banshee molded in red plastic from the same time period. If I am correctly recalling a story I heard back then the reason the Banshee mold was never used again was that it had suffered some damage and could no longer be used. Perhaps Matt Steele has the 'low-down' on this model.

That's the correct story, Bob. The mold was not useable for future production.
I had forgotten about the red test shots. Matt |

This is great history. I would love similar closure on many of the plastic nosecones no longer in production.

Estes had a big warehouse fire in the 90's. That's where many of the blow molds for parts not in production were stored, and were destroyed. The molds lost included the Maxi Brute blow molds (V-2, Pershing !a, X-wing), thought i am not aware of a complete list.

For a minute I thought this might be the explanation for the "red white or blue" nose cone for the Alpha in 1989-1992 and the subsequent emergence of the true ogive nose cone shape afterward, vs. the original PNC-50KA, but the timing is wrong. Oh well.......
As far as I can ascertain there never were any blue ones. The red ones were Alpha III nose cones.
