The Centuri 1/45th scale LJ II uses a 3.4" body tube according to the catalog on ninfinger.

A pretty odd size tube.

Mine uses a BT-101.

And making a most of the capsule/escape tower is not that simple.

It has to be made in multiple parts.

On my model the entire assembly is over 13" long.

The Mercury-Atlas and Mars Lander had the same tube, just different lengths. It was BT-100. Back in the day (when the M-A was sold) people wanting to clone Mars Lander's would get Mercury-Atlas tubes from Christine.

The scaled OD sizes would be:

1/45 LJII -- 3.422
M-A -- 3.429

BT-101 -- 3.938

I see a BT-100Z from Semroc but it is 3.744

The 3.7" BT-100 Mars Lander tube and the 3.4" tube used for the 1/45LJII and Mercury Atlas are NOT the same tube.

Sorry I did not mean to imply they were the same tube. I meant to say they are CLOSE to the same size.

According to this document http://www.rocketshoppe.com/info/Es...be_List_3.1.pdf the M-A used a BT-344 tube, no diameter is listed. The plans http://www.oldrocketplans.com/estes/est2111/est2111.pdf don't list any diameters either. I have assumed this is a 1/35th scale, using the Centuri plastic capsule that fit the 2.04" diameter tube. 1/35 of 120" is 3.429" ... if my detective work is wrong, mea culpa.

EDIT: never mind, i see now GH was talking about the Mars Lander....what i get for trying to multi-task

When it was first listed a few weeks ago it was still in the somewhat tattered shrinkwrap. Price was fairly high and at $299 starting price for the current listing, some may still consider that too high. Box does have some rough corners.

That all said, it IS a complete and pristine (as for the contents) Centuri Little Joe II 1/45th scale kit. And it ain't been all that long ago that one of these on eBay with a starting price that low would have had bidders all over it. Hard times for sellers I guess.

Anyway, just FYI if this is one of your 'dreamships' from back in the day and you really want to snag one. It was certainly one of my dream kits and was for many others, too.

Looks like a perfectly fine kit. The box damage is a shame. I'd discard that shrink wrap as it only makes the kit look worse.

And I would never put a starting bid that high. $200 at the most. Let the value grow organically, as it will.

I may yet build mine.

The LJII tube and the MA tube are NOT exactly the same size. VERY close, but no seegar.

No, what I said are the Mars Lander and Mercury-Atlas tubes are the same. The LJ II I believe is larger in diameter.

Yes, exactly right.

The LJ plastic nosecone is a pretty wobbly fit in the MR body tube (I've test fitted them before). One could build up the shoulder of the nose cone and 'make' it fit, but it would be sloppy.

They just ain't the same tube.

I sent the lister an email a few days ago telling him (her) not to loose heart, as this was one of the most desirable model rocket kits, but that the market was down somewhat these days and they may have to lower their starting bid yet again to get any bites (their original starting bid the first time it was listed with the shrink wrap still in place was $599, as I recall).

But yes, it is a perfectly fine kit and I *think* features the original balsa bulkheads instead of the later foam-core fiber centering rings that were instituted sometime in the early 70s or so. I have one LJ kit with the balsa rings and one with the foam core rings.
