A fine day to have a first flight on a new model rocket.

I prepped my new Estes Astron Sprint XL model with an Estes C11-3 motor.

The model left the pad quickly after motor ignition.

An excellent flight with a landing in some soft green weeds.

No damage.

The Sprint XL was an straight-forward build. The use of a plastic nose and tail cone along with laser-cut fins made the build much easier than the original version.

It's a good looking model in the stock paint scheme.

Keep bringing out the 'upscale'/XL kits Estes!

Great pics Bob, thanks. But did you REALLY have to mention the temps??? We're still freezing here back east!!!

Have ALWAYS gotten my original Sprint back on C6-7's but flew it then in about a 400 acre schoolyard, and now fly on a 500+ acre farm. It only hits about 1600' and the 90" streamer is EASILY visible from that altitude. If one is stupid enough to replace the streamer on this one with ANY size chute and uses a C6-7, they deserve to lose it.

You better make it a really big and wide streamer. The prototype was flown on our standard plastic streamers but this one was a good 15 feet long. The model fell like a rock, so if you switch out the 15" chute for a streamer make sure it's more of a competition type streamer that is in the 10 to 1 ratio. This isn't a small light weight model like the original Sprint was. It weighs in at 3 -1/2 times what the small one weighs.

I agree on the new larger Sprint. That thing is too large/heavy for a streamer, I was only speaking of the original.
The recovery drift of the original on a 90" streamer even with a C6-7 was minimal. I don't think it was ever over 1/4 mile.
Never was brave enough to launch one on an 18mm Aerotech D though. Might have to build one just for that purpose though.

Does this kit use a new nosecone? Or does it use the same cone as the Omega, et al? (PNC-60AH, IIRC...)

BTW, I don't think I've seen any commentary on the return of the "Astron" moniker. That's kinda kewl

The Cone is NEW and is a scaled up version of the BT-50 Balsa cone. The cone and tail cone are a blow molded together and need to be cut apart.

That tail cone could be a nice low drag component for a TARC booster rocket (with an appropriate sized payload section and transition chosen to match a particular year's TARC challenge).

This year is pretty much BT-80 sized payload sections, but who knows what next year's challenge will be? Those Estes TARC parts assortments were fantastic for last year.

Sorry, George.

Okay, I won't mention that as I type this message it is 70F outside in the shade.

It's been rocket painting weather for me this week. My Estes PS II Nike Smoke has the final white coat applied. Fins get painted tomorrow.
