Next put a single wrap of tape around the bit to protect the clay nozzle. I’ll grind that area of the bit smooth in the future so I can get rid of the tape and it will fit in the As also.

This shows two shims will be used to set the depth and a third will be used on the nozzle to drill against. Three shims are stacked on the nozzle, slide the depth stop down the bit sitting on the washers and tighten it.

After the depth stop is tight, remove two of the washers. With the bit back in you can see the 1/16” gap that will allow the bit to remove two seconds. Drill until the stop hits the washer, spin a lot to make sure the shavings are removed, shake them out. Put the washer and bit back in again to make sure all shavings are out. I won’t be able to test this one for a while but I’ll let you know how it goes.

Has the manufacturer recommended this delay drilling procedure?

There is a history of AT watching such consumer aftermarket mods, blessing it when it does not compromise reliabiity, then make a tool you can buy and ship them more cash. If they put the authorization and procedure on some obscure part of their website, that makes it compliant right away. They need not "confuse mass market consumers" by broadcasting it to all prospective customers.

Plenty of model rockets are operated not in strict NFPA compliance all the time. There is no enforcement mechanism and there is no problem to solve.

When U.S. Rockets released the very first reloadables in January 1990, well before AT-RMS, we recommended modifying the delays from the inside. It reduces afterburn which is important on thinner paper rockets like for example, Estes.

They were since certified under a different brand name.

I couldn't care less if the "manufacturer" approves this.
All that matters to me is IF IT WORKS.
