Estes PNC-50Y nose cone is back
Hello,
I opened my Tazz kit today and was surprised to see an oldie but goodie nose cone from back in the day, the PNC-50Y blow molded cone. Estes stopped using this nose cone and replaced it with the 2 piece PNC-50YR, close but not the same. Here is the new nose cone next to my vintage Antares from the 1970s and the newer PNC-50YR 2 piece cone. Here is a list of models that used this old nose cone, hopefully Estes could start selling these. 0807 Condor, 0819 Little John, 0820 Viper, 0864 Spartan, 1238 Avenger, 1276 Antares, 1277 Icarus 1322 Delta Star, 1324 Polaris, 1325 Gamma, 1342 Starblazer X-20, 1343 Orion Starfighter, 1356 Astro Bee, 1359 Orbital Interceptor, 1365 Sky-Hi, 1369 S.S. Cassiopeia, 1382 Comanche-3 1386 Asteroid Explorer, 1905 Stinger, 1906 Sizzler, 1913 Advanced Target Drone, 1923 Cougar |

Wow!
I always loved that NC! Maybe someone on FB can suggest they bring it out as a seperate part. That is really an amazing list of models. |

Nice to see that one back, it could be useful in cloning older designs as well that used the BNC-50Y.

The PNC-50K nose cone has been used on the Alpha III since 1971, and that particular nose cone has also had that designation since 1971. IIRC, the Alpha did not get a plastic nose cone until 1983 (at least according to the catalogs).

I would love to see the PNC-50X, I suspect it is long gone because very few kits were made with it, and the rereleased Multi-Roc didn’t have it. These were the rockets made with the PNC-50X:
1282 Photon Disruptor 1283 USS Atlantis 1286 Scamp 1329 Multi Roc 1362 The Bat 1372 Alien Explorer 1375 Scorpius |

it would be the PNC-50KA then, but it would have the shape of the old BNC-50K, not the current PNC-50KA, which is a strict tangent ogive.

Alpha nose cones
Here is a little display that I made for the Alpha 50th anniversary thing at the Museum of Flight showing the four Alpha nose cones. Alongside it is an Alpha III nose cone from a model I was flying yesterday.
The Alpha III/IV/VI/Phantom nose cone has, so far as I know, always been the same shape. There were some Alphas that came with the Alpha III nose cones between 1981-1992 - in between the first blow-molded nose cone shape and the second one.

Bernard- That is a very neat and informative display! The clear body tube sections is a nice touch. It would be interesting to know how many of each type was/have been produced. And considering that plastic cones go back, in any big numbers at least, to about 1970 (Centuri's plastic cones come to mind), that the Alpha actually went all the way to 1983 with a balsa cone. Thanks for sharing that. Earl

I have posted this some time ago, but I think the worst nose cone ever used for an “Alpha” was the PNC-60AH that came in my Super Alpha kit, back maybe 7-8 years ago. I refused to build it that way, so I turned a “K” nose cone for it.
