You did that too? My track length was shorter but the flight results were the same.

Well, it is quite obvious you were completely ignoring the safety code with these actions!! As I recall, the safety code that was in effect back then specifically called out the requirement for FIVE feet of Hot Wheels track for mini motors, EIGHT feet for 18mm motors.

Agree wholeheartedly with MarkB on this one.
Not worth the struggle.
Find a Quest kit, Estes kit or Estes RTF one.
Use plenty of noseweight.

Safety code only applied to rockets, not wheeled vehicles. It was the Model Rocket Safety Code, after all.

I am amazed I survived ages 8-11...

Sounds like Drain Bamage to me....
Many of the things that were "Boys being Boys" when I grew up would get one arrested nowadays, which in a word SUCKS.

I know what you mean. It used to be "Hey Jimmy, hold my Faygo Redpop and watch this!"

There was usually a ramp and/or an explosive involved.

NOTHING wrong with a Ramp and/or an EXPLOSIVE being involved then, and agree it WAS usually one or the other.

Exactly! ....and Jimmy's hearing did return, eventually. The use of his left eye, not so much.

Ah, the folly of youth.

I'm intrigued with hand carving a nose cone. Ive heard of turning one on a lathe. What material? I assume it takes a really good eye!
