I'm like tbzep, I have two of these but neither built. However, in looking over the instructions several years ago after I got them, I noticed there appeared to be an instruction addendum that seemed to call for adding additional round lead weights into the nose cone (the 'dome'). I assumed when I read it that, possibly, after the kit was first issued problems were reported with stability, and so additional weights were added to the kit to help solve that problem, hence the kit instruction addendum.

Do you know if your kit had the added additional weights? To be honest, I am not sure what the kit very originally called for, but maybe yours was an early one that did not have the additional weights.

Just a thought....

Yep, that it is.

So...looks like even the additional weights are not quite enough to ensure stable flight. That's good reference for when I *do* actually build one of these.

The original instructions had 2 weights, and it's erik442's that went unstable, haven't flown mine yet. I'll post the results with 3 weights after I launch mine.

I should add that I chose to additionally epoxy the dome weights and D4 card disk to the ballast cup before I glued the ballast cup to the inside of the dome.

Oops. Yep, got the two swapped.

It says loosely place the weights in there. I don't know about you guys, but I don't want things rattling around in R2's head. The Jawas might capture him and think he's defective. Next thing you know, he'd be disassembled and sold as scrap! I'd definitely seal them in with epoxy or something.

My kit did not include the addendum. My substitution of a plywood bulkhead and all the repair epoxy should compensate for the recommended additional weight. I was thinking about it last night and it could be that it's too top heavy. I'm going to add some small weights to the bottom and see what happens. If performance improves then I'm on the right track.

No such thing as "too top heavy"; just hit it with more THRUST.
