I had so much trouble with E9's that I switched to E12's. Now they are starting to fail as well.
They don't always explode. Sometimes they ignite and complete their burn while the rocket never leaves the pad. I had one blast deflector that I threw away because it had a 1" hole melted through it. I think that from now on I will jot down the date codes whenever I have a failure and see if they correspond in any way.

I will be waiting a bit longer until I'm satisfied the Estes E engines have a more positive reliability record.

Used the E9's a lot over the years, had about a 45% failure rate (nozzle blowouts, propellant slug accelerating through the model's body tube forward through the opened forward section after nosecone/recovery system blown off). Have yet to try the E12's, but see they've accumulated quite a bit of reputation as the E9's.
