Scottish Bag Pipes
Scottish Bag Pipes.
The other day while driving home, I could see a large group of men and women playing Scottish Bag Pipes. They were in a large parking lot at a recreational area. They were at least ten feet apart in a circle. I pulled in and listened for awhile until my wife called me. She asked "What is that sound in the background?" "Bag Pipes." She thinks they sound awful.

Not a big fan of the pipes either. You could get similar sound by holding a cat upside down under your arm while biting it's tail. |

When played well, the song Amazing Grace is very moving (to me) when play on bagpipes. But then again, that melody played on any one of a number of different instruments sounds good.

I'm not a big Star Trek tv show/movie fanatic, but isn't Amazing Grace on bagpipes played for Spock's funeral as they shoot his coffin out into space (to land on that planet I think) in the movie (not sure which one) when Spock dies: "I have been, and always will be, your friend", Spock says to Jim as he is dying of radiation poison on the other side of the, what, contaminated engine room?

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Yes, Amazing Grace on the Scottish pipes, played by Mr. Scott. And yes, landed on that Genesis planet, which sets up the next movie.
I had a friend from the electrical engineering department at Boeing in Renton who played the pipes. He practiced after work in a three-story parking garage across the street from the main plant, and one could listen to him from quite a distance. I imagine the reverberations in there were quite cool to play with. Fun stuff, actually.

I am probably in the minority when I profess to fondness for bagpipes. It probably started in the early 90s. I worked for HP and our trade shows featuring our workstations, servers, and electrical and mechanical design software, typically featured a customer, and how they used our products. For a couple years, we had JBL join us in our shows. They used our products to design stereo equipment. We had a monster wall of JBL speakers and amplifiers in our booth. Before a show’s daily opening, we would play an unbelievable rendition of Amazing Grace, on bagpipes, roaring from that wall of speakers. Many in the crowd, including myself, shed a tear or two at the incredible rendition, and shocking power of that wall of speakers roaring. Show promoters encoraged it, but never during show hours. We became the show’s daily opener, and closer.
Several years after, my family vacationed in Scotland, and heard unbelievable renditions of Amazing Grace and other songs, played on bagpipe at various castles we visited. About the only thing Scottish I don’t love is haggis, as has been discussed here on YORF pretty recently.

I don’t know if it’s still held, but a few decades ago when I still lived in S. Michigan my friends and I would make a day trip to Alma Michigan for the Alma Highland Festival which was held on Memorial Day Weekend.
Lots of Highland games: caber throw, etc. Herding dog contests (amazing animals!), storytelling, and TONS of bagpipes and dudes in kilts from all over the country. IIRC it went on for the entire weekend but ONE day only was all we could stand of constant bagpipe bombardment, so we always tried to be there on the day they held the dog contests.

I played the bagpipes as a comedic show closer for years!
The first time you strike in all three drones it scares the hell out of you. Vibrates your entire body. Bagpipes have gone high tech over the past twenty years. Unreliable cane reeds have been replaced by carbon fiber. Elk skin leather air bags are now made from Gortex. When I started you had to spend too much time on maintenance hoping your bag wouldn't leak air and the reeds would strike in. Bagpipes are a little like making a Redstone tower out of toothpicks. These kids don't know how easy they have it now!

Comrades:
One of our local high school's mascot is The Highlanders. Until you've seen a couple of dozen Hispanic girls, dark hair, dark eyes, in Tartan skirts, marching together playing bagpipes and drums . . . well, your life is incomplete. The same school always had the best mariachis in town, too. That's what I call a music program.
