Default Castle AFB

Castle AFB
I was there the other day.
It was closed.
Bummer.
Anyone know why?
Also, just north was another museum.
Can't remember the name.
Any help here?

WAYYYYYYYYY too many AFBs have either closed or have been turned into some "joint base" nonsense.
In my home state into the 90's we had 3 dedicated SAC B-52 bases. Wurtsmith, K.I. Sawyer, and Kincheloe.
Far too many closures when we should have kept the FOOT ON THE GAS for world airpower DOMINANCE.
The reductions to the USAF over the past 3 decades are flat-out ABSURD.

I got out in 1992 when they started the consolidation. I thought it stupid from the start.

BRAC SUCKED and still SUCKS.
We need MORE stand-alone AFBs from PEAK and not less !
Never should have combined TAC and SAC under "Air Combat Command" either.
That was another MORONIC forced change.
The reduction in the planned F-22 total airframes and diversion to F-35 production is terminally insane.
The F-22 aircraft is AWESOME and unrivaled at everything it does. The F-35 is an underachieving TURD that should be TOTALLY SCRAPPED. ANY fighter that cannot sustain Mach 1+ flight infinitely without at least a Mach 2 top speed is an INSULT to the title "Front Line Fighter" . Absolute JOKE in both performance and cost.

unless you are just another -23 fanboy

The YF-23 was deficient in several critical areas. One of the serious issues was the "stack" configuration of the -23's internal weapon bay. If the mission went to plan, weapons utilization might have been OK. If the mission ever went any other way, the -23 had to literally throw away key weapons at the front of the bay to get out the needed weapon from the back of the stack.

The -23 was seriously deficient in several critical maneuver and handling requirements. It was going to have to add a set of horizontal tails to correct those deficiencies. The added weight and drag would have further reduced range performance, which was already another deficiency.

And the LO aft thermal deck had problems. As in, falling apart. The production version would reportedly have had worse RF and IR signatures.

Yeah, the YF-23 was a good looking airplane. Unfortunately that don't count for much in technical decisions.

If your travels take you anywhere near Dayton Ohio, make the time, at least one whole day, to visit the National Air Force Museum.

F-23 was the superior aircraft over the F-22. Wasn’t chosen because of political BS.
F-23 went on to be a part of the NGAD Concept.

Yes - Travis AFB is still open. West-coast hub for heavy transports (C-5, C-17).

I have been to the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson in Dayton twice.
Favorite museum on the planet by far.
The only thing that would make it better would be regular supersonic passes on the hour over the field creating sonic booms. YESSSSSS, I LIIIIKE those.

Agreed!! W-P is the best aviation museum in the nation. my four sons and I spent 2 days hitting it back in 1999 with the wife as a reluctant hanger-on, She finally found a shady spot after lunch the first day and spent the rest of the visit crocheting.........
