It was probably easier to get good, stiff 1/16” balsa wood back in the 1960s. Most of the balsa in that thickness that I have seen in recent years is only suitable for sheeting a curved surface.

While I've never had a Centuri Sabre in my possession, I do have some one piece, blow molded PNC-20N nose cones still fresh in the bag (ignore the part description on the hang tag; they're clearly not BNC-20N).

I think this would be a fun clone, I need to look through my Estes nose cone collection and see if I have the correct nose. Luckily I can print the decal with the Alps printer.

John,

Can you measure the exposed section? I'm guessing it's 2 7/8", or thereabouts. Thanks!

Cheers,

Hi Jay;

Please forgive the sloppy placement of the rule in the photo below.

The PNC-20N nose is just shy of 2-11/16" in length. I've overlaid a PNC-20A nose for comparison; it's 2-7/8" long. The other main difference is the nose tip; the 20A is blunt in comparison.

The length on the Sabre kit cone matches up with that measurement.

I found the nose cone, now just need to print the Copper decal with my Alps printer. I hope to get started on this build next week. The fins look familiar, but I cannot match them to any other Centuri or Estes kit.....Also I took a picture of the BNC-20N from Original Eclipse rocket. I thought for sure the fins would be 1/16, but if you say 3/32 the 3/32 it is.

Yep, 3/32". Definitely not 1/16". Good luck on the build. Post photos of the build...interested to see how the Alps handles the metalflake gold.

Pic is crap, but if I fly tomorrow or Monday, this one gets an A8-3 first flight. Decal is downstairs. The Sabre script looks fine, but the strip is a mess. Very skidmark-like. Launch lug next, then a coat of primer and go from there.

John,

No problem, thanks for playing along.

It looks like the (relatively recent) Wizard (blue paint scheme) cone that I have is a PNC-20A. Thanks so much!

Cheers,
