Default CHINESE Balloon over U.S. Territory

Yes, there is a Chinese surveillance balloon over the continental USA.
F-22 Raptors out of Nellis were scrambled to intercept it but were not allowed to shoot it down.
They need to SHOOT THAT POS DOWNNNNN !!!

Should have been a SMOULDERING WRECK as soon as it entered our airspace.

God help me - I agree with GH. This is an affront to US sovereignty and an embarrassment. Smoke it. Should have done it over northern Montana. Instead they wasted time and let it move into more populated areas.

They allegedly tracked it before it got into Alaska. You can't tell me they were scared it would land on people if they shot it down in Alaska. I think only three people live there, and one of them is a draft horse.

Another is transiting Latin America now.

This makes no sense that it has been allowed to remain over our sovereign airspace.
There shouldn't even be any debate on this. It should have been a smouldering heap in a Montana field.
Allowing it to CONTINUE to gather data is RIDICULOUS and ABSURD.

What's next ? Chinese Fighter Jets intruding in our airspace ?
C'mon noww.

Some type of explosion over Montana. No word on what this is. Governor's office is "looking into it"

What's next? A pathogen carrying balloon? This thing should have been shot down over the Aleutians.

Not the first time. They claim they don't want to shoot it down to avoid debris damage on the ground, but it has flown over very underpopulated areas AND this has apparently happened before starting years ago, so they could have been prepared.

An F-22 is capable of flying high enough, but can't do what would be best to do - punch a small hole in it to leak gas and thereby force it to slowly descend. However, we have have at least one type of fully operational, mobile anti-drone laser, one ship-mounted system I know of, and other laser systems near deployment which, with a balloon the size of three buses, may be able to produce a small enough spot at 50k feet (using their range-focused beams) to do that.

China’s Spy Balloon Over Montana Is Part Of A Larger, More Troubling Pattern
The Pentagon says Chinese balloons have flown over the U.S. multiple times before and other peculiar incidents point to a much wider issue.

You're never going to get some slow, fading drop from altitude. A short burst from the F-22's gun is the answer.

I have no idea. Lasers would be cooler (hotter) and easy to try. Like I said, the ground work to support that could have already been done.

Also, by US and probably international rules, the balloon should have a recovery system for safe descent of the onboard hardware upon balloon failure and a radar retroreflector. So, I'm not even sure I buy the debris excuse.

US rules are here:
