Looks like they will try again tonight, with liftoff scheduled for 12:34am tonight.

Info from NASA blog on cause of the stand down Sunday night:

“Mission teams stood down from a Feb. 27 launch attempt to review an unusual data signature related to the ignition fluid, known as triethylaluminum triethylboron (TEA-TEB), used to start the Falcon 9’s first stage kerosene and liquid oxygen Merlin engines. SpaceX removed propellant from the Falcon 9 rocket and the crew safely exited the Dragon spacecraft. After a thorough review of the data and ground system, both NASA and SpaceX teams identified a clogged filter on the ground as the cause. SpaceX teams replaced the filter, purged the TEA-TEB line with nitrogen, and verified the lines are clean and ready for the next launch attempt early Thursday morning.”

So, hopefully they have their issue resolved completely and Woody and crew can head to space tonight.

Just a while ago I was listening to the launch commentary. The commentator Deroll Nail started talking about the personal items the each Astro is allowed to take with them to space. They went through a few of the items that the other crew members were taking, but when they got to Woody they played a quick clip from, apparently, a recent press conference where Woody mentions he is taking just one item: a photo of his dad. They go on to explain that Jim Hoburg, Woody’s father, passed away last summer.

So……….while it has to be a very, very exciting day for Woody and his extended family, it is no doubt a bittersweet moment since his dad is not there to share the moment. I did not know that Mr. Hoburg had passed. I recall that he was with Woody at LDRS-22 in Kansas and I remember talking with he and Woody under their prep tent not long before I interviewed the young Woody for his upscale Mosquito flight.

Looks like all continues to be go for the launch tonight.

Oops, I almost missed it, thinking it was 12:34 Central time.

Was 12:34 chosen randomly or just because?

...successful liftoff and into orbit! Stuck the landing on the first stage, too! That is Woody second astro over from this camera view.

NASA needs to revert back to good old Imperial measurement units for Velocity (MPH, none of that KmH crap) and Distance (Miles, not Km).
This is neither Europe nor Canada.

It's an issue with the combination of the orbital inclination of ISS and the amount of energy needed to get it there and still be able to recover the booster. A hold warms and lessens fuel density so less is available to chase ISS to a less than optimal rendezvous point and still recover the booster. Any length hold would have postponed the flight.

I think your first point is significantly more important than fuel/ox temp (and therefore density)...ever since the earliest days of Gemini and Vostok rendezvous, it's been important that you launch at the exact moment the "plane" of the orbiting object you wish to dock with passes overhead of your launch point. So-called "plane changes" (when you aren't perfectly lined up with the orbital plane of your target) are very expensive in terms of velocity changes ("delta-V") during the orbital catch-up, so any time they are trying to meet up in orbit, you see these so-called "instantaneous launch windows".

What's even cooler is: Although it's critical that you launch your vehicle at the exact instant the "plane" of the orbiting target passes over you...and that you incline your launch to be on the same heading as the orbiting target...it is not mandatory that the target ITSELF is exactly overhead. But every once in awhile, a launch just happens to schedule out where the ISS itself is directly over the launch pad during a rendezvous mission (manned or cargo only), and a clever photographer captures the bright star overhead as the rocket roars to life. A beautiful beginning to a cosmic dance.

Really, really glad that one of our own (childhood model rocketeer, NAR member and competition participant) is living out our childhood dreams. GO Falcon! GO Dragon! GO Woody!

Well, Woody and crew have been on orbit for about three and half months now. Attached below is an image of Woody from about a week ago during one of his space walks! Go Woody! I think he has made a couple of space walks now.

Link to a brief NASA article about the image.

Woody was used as an example as to where participating in TARC could lead in some of Trip’s remarks at the pre-event briefing, in James Duffy’s announcements during the day and in several bits of speaking at the awards ceremony at this year’s TARC.

Sometimes these remarks included “you don’t have to win TARC to become an astronaut”. Apparently Woody’s team was in the money (top 10) but was not the winner the year he participated in the finals.
