Hey sandman. What size of tubes are used for the guns on the wing tips? What size of engine , and where is the CG point at? What size of wood for the wings and tale? Is the canopy made with 110 card stock?

Balsa fins are 1/8". Set up for an E9-4 or D12 -3 24mm motor. (best guess 'cause I haven't simmed it) The guns are a combination of 1/4" and 3/16" tube plus 1/8" dowel. I have to double check the length...I have it somewhere. As for the CG...I can't do the Roc sim but about 1 oz or a bit more of clay in the nose should be enough. My best guess would be the CG just in front of the canopy. I'm gonna go check on TRF in the archive. I think Dr. Sue may have a rocsim on it/

Thanks sandman. I can't think of any thing else to ask about this build. You have been very helpful and I'm sure there will be a few of these Viper built over the winter. I am gethering the parts now like a squarl gethering nuts. Will be sending and order for the decal shortly.
There is another upscale I have in mind and that's the Ests BLACKHAWK kit # 2053. The PNC-60AH nose cone would work for this model also. The decals are all white marking. Do you think you could make me a set of 168% upscale decals if I sent you a set of the orignal decals? Thanks again sandman. |

Pic #1 Nothing special here. just a standard "E" motor mount.
Pic #2 Motor mount installed and the two bottom turbo tubes glued. Pic #3 Glued the top turbo tube on. All straight cuts so I cut out the fins on my band saw and stack sanded them on my belt sander. Very low tech but it only took 10 minutes. Probably would have taken 15 minutes to set up a laser cutter.

Did somebody say laser cutter?
It's funny that you would mention laser cutter Gordy! I just cut out some 1/8" ply fins on the laser cutter. I cut the wing fins all one piece! Would anybody be interested in a parts kit? I am thinking of fins, fin guide, canopy, and if there is demand, tubes and dowels for the laser cannons, and the 0.040 half round for the nose cone detail.
Would anybody be interested in a parts kit? I would like to build a viper, but I don't have a PNC-60AH. If anybody has a cone, I am willing to trade a prototype fin set. I would like to get feedback on the fit of the parts. |

The laser cutting for me would have to include a 4 hr drive to Commonwealth and back

John, I think the reason the fins were multipart was to give them strength with alternate direction grain lines. The forwardmost part of the fin needs to have the grain running parallel to the body tube. But the main part of the fin which connects to the turbo tube needs to have the grain running parallel to the fin leading edge. If the grain on the main fin is running parallel to the body they are too liable to snap if flexed from the tip. If the one-piece fins were cut from lite ply, or a plastic like the other Commonwealth upgrade fins, one piece should be no problem. Also, I think I have an extra nosecone I can get to you. This would be a really fun Huvars build. Steve |

Lite ply fins
Gus,
I cut the fins our of light ply, but I am curious how the fins would work out of polystyrene. I am amazed how well polystyrene bonds to paper using pro-bond. I also picked up some nano glue cheap at microcenter (of all places!) that I want to try out. Just looked online -- wow it's cheap! http://www.microcenter.com/single_p...duct_id=0309528 |
