Default Trail marker tape streamers?

Hello All,

Last week when I was checking in on a friend's horses, I noticed an item in the barn that might make a good streamer material, and I was wondering if anyone here has ever tried it. It is Trail Marker Tape (see: http://www.amazon.com/Hunters-Speci...r/dp/B0000AW05Q ), made by Hunter's Specialties. The orange plastic tape comes in 150' rolls and appears to be 1" wide. Unlike the plastic flagging tape that is commonly used for streamer material, this tape is photo-degradable, which could be useful for model rocket events that are held on or near grazing land or wildlife areas. It is available at hunting & fishing supply outlets and at large retailers such as Walmart. Although the product description says that it is easily "tear-able" (to enable pieces to be quickly torn off the roll to mark trees and bushes), I found that it took a considerable amount of tensile force to even just deform it before it would tear, so it seems to be strong enough to serve as a streamer material.

No I haven't, that's for sure.
Try it and see if it is worth the cost vs. anything else..
I keep it simple and cheap, so I have a narrower perspective on the topic. 4-6 bucks is lot for me. Also, I'm not impressed with 'photo-degradable' as a concept, frankly speaking. I think its a good choice for ending up on a roadside wire fence, but it still doesn't work if they end up in a landfill (retired rocket) or end up in the bottom of a river (lost rocket), where they will never get enough sunlight to photo degrade. Hence, me you need to know specifically where it will end up, when making a decision on material choice.

It's available for only $1.88 per 150' roll from Bowhunters Supply Store (see: http://www.bowhunterssupplystore.co...arker-tape.html -- and the shipping is just 99 cents). My thought was that it could be a "selling point" that might make it easier to obtain permission to fly from certain tracts of land. Even if its photo-degradability isn't very rapid, it is still non-toxic to grazing animals and wildlife. Also:

All of the components of balsa-and-paper model rockets using trail marker tape streamers (and rubber band or cotton twine shock cords) would photo-degrade, bio-degrade, or rust away if any of the rockets were lost to trees, tall grass, or other vegetation. While I prefer plastic flagging tape for streamers, I would happily switch to trail marker tape for streamers if it would turn a land owner's "NO" into a "YES" for holding a model rocket event on his or her land.

The shipping cost is impressive, but my personal deal still outstrips anyone's cost:
(a dollar and walking distance ). I do paper as my plastic dependency is lowered to a minimum. Hard to do I know, but we a have a fairly granola Eco culture over here in Cambridge.
I'm a hiker and adopted to the 'taking it with me' 'tude.
I have a sporting good store across the street from me and they do hunting and fishing. I will check if they have it.

If you try it, please let us know here. The trail marker tape does have good "fluttering 'n flapping" qualities because it is thin like Starlight Model Rockets' mylar streamers. Due to health and transportation issues (I don't drive or own a vehicle anymore), I can't get out to the pasture where I fly very often.

What ever happened to using good, old fashioned (and cheap) crepe paper for streamers. The rough texture actually slows a rocket's fall fairly well. It biodegrades nicely. Heck, an animal could eat a whole roll and it most likely would not hurt them at all. And all the colors of the rainbow. Did I mention it is quite lightweight, as well?
I wouldn't think mylar streamers would slow a rocket much at all.

All of what you wrote about crepe paper streamers is true--but in my case at least, they were so short-lived that I needed to attach them to my rockets' nose cones using snap swivels, so that I could quickly change them out when they tore after just a few flights.

I will check to see what they are asking for if they do stock it. If they do have it, and it is reasonably priced, heck I will try it. That wont be this weekend though, but probably later in the month at one of our sponsored launches.

Good! I'll order a roll of it (or get one locally) next month (it doesn't look like we'll have much good flying weather here for a while).
